OFF THE BEATEN TRACK The following opportunities are for those seeking sightseeing and recreation opportunities off the beaten track. Access requirements vary from 4-wheel drive vehicles to a helicopter flight. For details on locations and access, visit the Haines Junction Visitor Reception Centre. Hume Road Hume Road leads into the Dezadeash hills. These rounded hills behind Dezadeash Lake are a nice area for walking. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required. Ruby Range A four-wheel drive access road around the backside of Kluane Lake heads into the Ruby Range. This is a popular walking and hiking spot with locals. A helicopter flight can also be arranged to take you in and out of this area. Alsek Valley Trail The Alsek Valley Trail follows a major valley off the Alaska Highway north of the village. Four-wheel drive access is possible for the first five kilometers until the road meets the Kluane National Park boundary. Those wanting to continue on to Alsek Pass must do so on foot. Paint Mountain Trail Paint Mountain stands alone on the far side of Pine Lake just outside of the village. Though there is no designated trail, there are at least two ways to hike to the top. Average hiking time one-way is about three hours. Kloo Lake Kloo Lake is 30.6 km north of the village off the Alaska Highway. A beach makes this lake worth the 10 15 minute, four-wheel drive trek through the woods. There are no highway signs marking the pull-off. |
