Snowmobiling Within easy driving distance of Haines Junction lie vast areas of snow above treeline with deep fresh white powder, a season that runs well into May, and ample choices for novices to experts. Chilkat Pass/Haines Summit(140 km south of Haines Junction on the Haines Highway) A popular area with locals and visitors, particularly during the months of March and April. This is the highest spot on the Haines Highway (1,065 m)a vast and impressive area with access to glaciers, and snow late in the season. At Easter snowmobilers from all over congregate at the summit for the weekend. Mount Decoeli area (25 km north of Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway) Another very popular spot for snowmobiling and a bit closer to Haines Junction than Chilkat Pass. Park in the parking lot at Bear Creek Summit (1,003 m). Kluane National Park and Reserve In the national park snowmobiles are permitted on the road to Kathleen Lake and on the ice surface only. |
