The Haines Junction area has lots of recreation opportunities for those of you wanting to plan your own activities. This section is organized by type of activity, each with a few detailed recommendations. BE PREPARED / PLAY SAFE There are risks to many of the activities described below. Plan ahead and be prepared with the proper equipment, clothes, food, safety and emergency gear. Research your route; find out about current conditions and weather. Do not attempt an activity above your level of experience and skills. Always let someone know what you are planning on doing and where you are planning on going. For more information on any of the following opportunities, contact the Haines Junction Visitor Reception Centre. If partaking in an activity in Kluane National Park and Reserve, visit one of the parks two reception centres for detailed information. Visitors planning an overnight activity in the park (summer and winter) must register at one of the park visitor reception centres and obtain a Wilderness Use Permitfees apply. Travel safely in bear country; pick up a copy of the You are in Bear Country brochure at one of the park visitor reception centres. SPRING, SUMMER, FALL ACTIVITIES Hiking, camping and other warm weather activities in the Haines Junction area are best between June 15 - September 15. At this time of year the temperature ranges from highs of 28° C (82°F) to lows of 0° C (32°F). Earlier in the season there could still be snow in the high country, and temperatures cool quickly in the fall. Wildflower Season in the valley is usually the second week of June to the end of the month; in the alpine it is usually late June to mid-July. Fall Colours are usually best from the first to the third week of September. WINTER ACTIVITIES Mid-February to mid-March is the best time for winter activities in Haines Junction and surrounding area. The days are getting longer, and there is usually lots of sun and snow.
