Fishing

There are risks to many of the activities described below. Plan ahead and be prepared with the proper equipment, clothes, food, safety and emergency gear. Research your route; find out about current conditions and weather. Do not attempt an activity above your level of experience and skills. Always let someone know what you are planning on doing and where you are planning on going.

Fishing is popular in the Haines Junction area with a number of lakes and rivers to choose from:

  • Pine Lake: lake trout, northern pike, whitefish, burbot
  • Kluane Lake: lake trout, northern pike, grayling, whitefish, burbot
  • Kathleen Lake: native rainbow trout, lake trout, kokanee salmon (landlocked sockeye salmon), and arctic grayling
  • Dezadeash Lake: lake trout, whitefish, northern pike, grayling, and burbot
  • motorboats are permitted on Kathleen and Mush Lakes, both in Kluane National Park and Reserve
  • hike to Mush, Bates, St. Elias and Louise Lakes, all popular fishing spots in Kluane National Park and Reserve
  • A National Park Fishing Licence is required to fish in Kluane National Park and Reserve. Outside the park a Yukon Fishing Licence is required. Both are available at retail stores in Haines Junction and at the Haines Junction Visitor Reception Centre.
