Bird Watching

There is good birding in the spring in the Shakwak Valley. One hundred and eighteen species of birds nest within the boundaries of Kluane National Park and Reserve.

  • June is the breeding season in the valley; birds are singing all day and night
  • Dezadeash River Trail on the edge of the Village is an excellent option for birders
  • Sulphur Lake, 36 km north of Haines Junction on the Alaska Highway, is a good place to view waterfowl, including Trumpeter Swans and Bald Eagles.
  • Winter visitors–join our Annual Christmas Bird Count!
